Pride's Beginnings
The Stonewall riots are commemorated throughout Pride Month.
This protest took place at the Stonewall Inn in New York City's Greenwich Village neighborhood around the end of June 1969.
Because of the laws against homosexuality at the time, only a few institutions welcomed gay individuals.
Stonewall's patrons fought back against those implementing an anti-gay legal system in response to a police raid. This is a watershed moment for LGBTQIA+ rights.
The very first gay pride parades happened in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco a year after the rebellion.
Several homosexual rights associations sprang out as a result of this, both in the United States and around the world. In 2016, the Stonewall National Monument was established in New York City.
Pride Month was first identified by two US presidents, Bill Clinton in 1999 and then Barack Obama in 2009 (and every year since).
The Heroes of Pride
Stonewall was "thrown the first brick" by Marsha P. Johnson. Other powerful LGBTQIA+ pioneers like Harvey Milk (the first out homosexual US politician) and Sylvia Rivera stand alongside her (a transgender activist).
How do you celebrate Pride?
Pride is about commemorating those who died for the right to celebrate their identities. Many elder members of the community lost a large number of friends to the AIDS crisis and see Pride as a chance to pay tribute to those who died.
Younger generations, on the other hand, perceive Pride as an opportunity to completely express their identity.
Throughout the month, several large cities have Pride Parades and other festivities.
