"This nation will remain the land of the free, as long as it is the home of brave"- Elmer Davis November 11, 1918, which is celebrated as Veterans day all over the U.S, was earlier considered to be honored as Armistice day, a day that marked the end of World War I. The commencement of this federal holiday started in the year 1919, when President Wilson proclaimed it to be Armistice Day. Soon after this, a legislation was passed on November 11, 1938. Since then, this day got popularized as "Armistice day" all over the U.S.A. The beginning of this holiday marked the remembrance of all those ex-service men from World War I who were honored for their patriotism to serve and sacrifice for the well-being and security of U.S. citizens. In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill that stated the announcement of an official U.S. holiday, to be held each year on 11th of November. After having been through both, World War II and the Korean War, the U.S Congress made minor changes to the legislative Act of 1938. With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor veterans of America. Thereafter, the name "Armistice Day" got replaced to "Veterans Day", a day in U.S. history that honored all American veterans including both of the World Wars. November 11th offers Americans an opportunity to celebrate the courage and sacrifice of all U.S. veterans. Instead of celebrating the world peace, the day now celebrates the U.S. Military and its achievements. Veterans Day is celebrated as an annual American holiday to honor military veterans. However, if it falls on Sunday, then the following Monday is regarded as leave, and if it occurs on Saturday, then either Friday or Saturday may be announced as an off. People often confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day, however both carry a unique significance. Memorial Day celebrates the remembrance of all those military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, whereas Veterans Day honors those living veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and are ex-service men now. To observe Veterans Day with a real feeling of patriotism, communities hold ceremonies and organize parades that project the military strength of the nation and its unity behind the men and women of the Armed Forces. The organization of parades symbolizes an achievement or accomplishment made by a group of veterans to serve their country. The President and other public officials of the country are invited as chief guests in these events. At these events you may see military bands performing patriotic songs. These musical bands offer an increased level of joy for fun and entertainment. These bands are played to encourage the commendable work done by these service men which depicts pride for the nation. Soldiers also fire guns in the air to offer a salute to all those who died while serving their country.
